Mercer Watch Co., like many micro-brands, began life on Kickstarter with its introductory timepiece, the Brigadier. Since then, Mercer has grown its catalog, and last year the New Jersey-based brand released the Airfoil, a contemporary take on a pilot’s watch with an aesthetic that isn’t all too unfamiliar (there are some strong Bremont Solo vibes coming off of this one). At $799, this Sellita SW200-powered timepiece sits in a sweet spot for a lot of watch buyers, but it’s also in a very competitive space. As far as the components and specifications go, the package is relatively solid. You have a 40mm case available in brushed stainless steel or black DLC. The dial is matte black with applied numerals and markers. The hands are broad, stylized swords accented with a simple red seconds hand. Super-LumiNova BGW9 lights up the dial at night. Paired with the watch is a padded shell cordovan strap.

What makes the Airfoil a bit more unique within its genre is its “Ruggedized” case, which means that it is coated with a hardening material that rates to approximately 1200 Vickers (that is over seven times as hard as the base 316L stainless steel). A hard hit won’t prevent a ding, but normal daily wear should mean your case remains relatively scratch-free. It also gives the case a unique, somewhat-slick feel.

For the full review of the Airfoil, watch the video below.

All in all, this is relatively compelling package. The other thing worth noting is that the watch is assembled in the America, which means that final QC takes place here. If the styling speaks to you, the specs and the special case treatment make this one worthy of consideration. Mercer Watch Co.
