Just a proposal, how about a Fifty Fathoms homage?

For many years, I am always on a look out for Fifty Fathoms homages. This is the beauty I am talking about

I did get Seiko SNZH55. It was beautiful in it's own right. But it did not scratch the itch. I did find Helson Skindiver to be a close match.

But the thickness (14.5 mm) and lug to lug distance (51 mm) was a turn off to me.

An idea came to me during the preordering of my 2 Estorils last October 2015. From the front facing render, the Estoril have a bit of the DNA of the Fifty Fathoms, at least to me.

Now, with both Estorils in my hands, I think it is doable for Borealis to make this FF homage using the same parts; case, mil hands, domed sapphire crystal, crown and maybe movement. Just 2 main items need to be change; the dial and the bezel insert.

The dial will be similar to the pics above. The bezel insert printing same as the above pics, but with slightly domed sapphire crystal instead.

What do you all think of this proposal? Like it or hate it, it is just my proposal. :)

I'd much rather see good original designs. I think grail watches deserve to be saved for if they're truly grail watches. I also think a good quality rep would be preferable to an homage if you have to have that watch and aren't willing to bleed for it. To me a quality rep is less lame than an homage with a different name on the dial. I wouldn't own a rep because it's like cheating IMO, and I also think homages are lazy. I didn't feel this way at first and I am still relatively new to wristwatches, but it didn't take long before homages lost all appeal for me.

I would urge Borealis to continue where they left off with the Seafarer II. That is a great watch and a fantastic value, and it's better for that they didn't use someone else's template for the design. That to me is far more interesting than a copy of someone else's watch. For me the truly iconic micro brand watches are original designs. My opinions, and not meant to inflame any argument.

My guess is you probably disapprove of the Estoril project then. :p
It sounds like a strong word when you say it. I understand that homage watches appeal to a large group of customers. I understand that an original watch is a lot more risky. Look at Hollywood and the proliferation of sequels and remakes. I understand going with the Sure Thing. I like Borealis and they can make any watch they feel like, and I'll buy the watches I like.

For myself, I am not interested in homages.

but take that with a grain of salt because it was only a week or two ago that I started a thread recommending an homage. I started buying watches in April. My tastes have been establishing themselves and will continue to do so. Newbie opinions here.

Hmm ... the thread title says it all.

Why did you even want to discuss in this thread if you are not interested in homage in the first place?

Anyway, let's agree to disagree, cool? :)

It must be nice to be able to afford a real heritage "Fifty Fathoms"! But, for the rest of us, a homage would have to do for now!

Count in me in for a homage so long as the L2L dimension is kept at 49 mm or under!

Both around $400 range.

I like everything about the latter, except the 54 mm lug to lug distance. :(

If the former have the sapphire bezel insert and the dial like latter, that will be ideal for me.

What are your opinions?

The L2L on the Uchronos Aqua Lung is 51mm, I think, not 54mm ?

Great lookers, no doubt !

EDIT: My bad, it looks like it is 53mm !!!
